Long Car Rides

It is something I miss about being in the States.  Bermuda is so small, there are no real long, car rides to take.  Often the trips to do errands and things are so short you barely hear an entire song on the radio.  And it makes the people passing people even funnier.  Your drive is 10 minutes long, do you really need to pass someone to get to your destination?  Such a hurry.

The Blind Side

This evening we went to see the Blind Side with Sandra Bullock.  A well done, feel good movie.  Sometimes you just need to go to a movie that you know will be good and leave you feeling happy.  This is it.  It is even better that it is a real story.  Sandra Bullock does a great job and my favorite character is the SJ the little brother in the movie.  I am sure he is a good guy in real life but the kid who played him in the movie was a hoot.  Want a guaranteed movie that leaves you smiling?  The Blind Side.

Trial by Fire

There was an interesting article in the New Yorker that I spent a while reading entitled "Trial by Fire."  Story about a guy, Todd Willingham, tried and executed in Texas for arson that killed his three kids.  Tragic story but reinforces my disbelief at Texas's attitude about the death penalty.  I understand that people want justice and "an eye for an eye."  But when you have a case with a poor defendant who has inadequate representation and a judicial process levied against him, putting someone on death row and executing him is the furthest thing from justice that I can imagine.  While on death row, an interested friend convinced a fire expert to review the evidence and he was able to prove the evidence did not point to arson but they still executed the poor guy. 

Then you think of how many guys in Illinois have been exonerated from death row because of the advances in DNA technology that now proves their innocence.  Because there were so many, the Governor actually suspended executions.  If you cannot prove that someone committed a crime by 100%, there is just no reason to sentence them to death.  Sorry for the political rant today, article just bothered me.  When I was younger I would have definitely told you I was for the death penalty.  But after law school and time (and a little wisdom), I have seen enough situations that I do not believe it is warranted.  No bleeding liberal here, just someone who wants justice.  Once someone is executed, it is just too late if they turn out to be innocent.

Queen's visit to Bermuda

The Queen of England is in Bermuda for a few days visiting her
subjects. The newspaper interviewed a couple of kids who met her and
one young boy was quoted as saying he was surprised at her appearance
because he thought she was tall and black. I guess he was thinking of
Queen Latifah?

Everything is better with Cheese

Last night, Melinda came over for some cheese fondue.  Matt came later and finished our leftovers.  But, with a good friend and cheese, things just straighten themselves out and everything looks brighter.  The power of cheese, amazing.  (And Melinda too, of course.)

24 hour NYC trip

Actually, I don't think it is even for 24 hours. Boss has me flying to
NY for the day for a meeting. Seems like a lot for just a meeting but
atleast I will be able to see Jill and Jeff and get some pizza!

Tired

I still feel tired from the weekend.  It didn't make things better last night, when I feel asleep on the couch for an hour and woke up at 8:30pm.  I wasn't finished putting all my things away from my Chicago trip yet.  So, unpacked and organized things.  I finished An Echo in the Bone, Diana Gabaldon's latest.  Then found myself pretty much staring at the ceiling when I finally turned the light off.  When I woke up this morning, if felt like I could seriously close my eyes and sleep another couple of hours.  I was half tempted too.  I have never been a great sleeper but this is ridiculous.  It doesn't help that there was a robbery on my road last week.  2 guys stormed in a house with a fake gun while the homeowner was sitting there in his living room watching tv.  Having that kind of stuff swirling around in my head doesn't make for a restful night's sleep.  I've got a work dinner after work but it shouldn't be too late.  With everything unpacked, I hope I can lock up the house and get in an early night's sleep.
